Subfloor Repair & Leveling FAQs

Why is subfloor preparation necessary?

A flat, stable subfloor is critical to prevent your new flooring from squeaking, separating, or failing. Manufacturers require specific flatness tolerances to maintain warranties.

How do you level a concrete subfloor?

We grind down high spots with diamond grinders and fill low spots (birdbaths) with self-leveling cement compounds to create a perfectly flat surface.

Can you fix squeaky floors?

Yes! Squeaks are usually caused by the subfloor rubbing against joists. We screw down the subfloor securely to the joists before installing new flooring to eliminate movement.

What if my subfloor has water damage?

We will cut out and remove any rotted or compromised wood subflooring and replace it with new plywood to ensure a solid structural foundation.

Does subfloor prep cost extra?

Yes, preparation is labor and material intensive. We provide an estimate, but final costs often depend on what we find once the old flooring is removed.

What is a moisture barrier?

A moisture barrier protects your floor from ground vapor. On concrete, we use liquid membranes or specialized adhesives. On wood, we use underlayment paper or plastic.

Can I skip subfloor leveling to save money?

We do not recommend it. Skipping prep is the #1 cause of flooring failure. It leads to hollow spots, cracked locking mechanisms, and eventual replacement.

How long does subfloor repair take?

Minor prep adds a few hours. Major leveling or repair can add 1-2 days to your project timeline.
