Engineered vs. Solid Hardwood

Both are real wood. Both add incredible value. But their construction dictates where they can survive. For many Southern California homeowners, the choice isn't about style—it's about physics.

The Core Difference

Solid Hardwood is milled from a single piece of timber. It reacts strongly to humidity, expanding when wet and shrinking when dry.

Engineered Hardwood features a top layer of real wood veneer glued to a multi-plywood core. This cross-grain construction neutralizes movement, making it highly stable.

The "Wear Layer" Explained

In engineered wood, the top layer you walk on is the wear layer.

  • 1-2mm: Cannot be refinished.
  • 3-4mm: Can be refinished 1-2 times.
  • 5-6mm: Can be refinished 3+ times.

Which Foundation Do You Have?

Concrete Slab

Common in Irvine, Cerritos, Santa Monica

Winner: Engineered Wood.

Solid wood cannot be glued directly to concrete without expensive subfloor build-up. Engineered wood can be glued down or floated safely.

Raised Wood Subfloor

Common in Long Beach, Whittier, older LA homes

Winner: Tie (Both Work).

Since you can nail into the wood subfloor, you can install either solid or engineered. Solid wood is often preferred here for tradition.

The Wide Plank Trend

Modern design favors wide planks (7" to 10"). Solid wood becomes unstable at these widths and is prone to cupping. If you want the wide-plank look popular in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, Engineered Wood is mandatory.

Quick Questions

Does engineered wood decrease home value?

No. High-quality engineered wood is often more expensive than solid commodity oak. It adds significant value, especially in high-end markets like Beverly Hills.

Is it waterproof?

No. Both are real wood and will damage with standing water. For waterproof options, see our Vinyl vs Laminate guide.
