Subfloor Preparation: The Foundation of Perfect Flooring

The most important part of your new floor is the part you'll never see: the subfloor. At DuraRoots, we believe that 80% of a quality installation happens before the first plank is laid. Neglecting subfloor preparation is the leading cause of flooring failure.

Common Subfloor Issues

  • Unevenness: Concrete slabs often have "birdbaths" (dips) or humps. Wood subfloors can sag between joists.
  • Moisture: Excessive moisture in concrete can ruin adhesives and warp wood.
  • Damage: Cracks in concrete or rotted plywood from old leaks.

The DuraRoots Standard

Industry standards generally require floors to be flat within 3/16" over 10 feet. We achieve this through:

1. Grinding

We use specialized concrete grinders to take down high spots, ridges, and old adhesive residue. This creates a flat, clean surface for bonding.

2. Self-Leveling Compound

For low spots, we pour a liquid cement-based leveler that flows into dips and hardens perfectly flat. This eliminates the "trampoline effect" where floors bounce when you walk.

3. Plywood Repair

On raised foundations, we sand down swollen seams and replace compromised plywood panels to ensure a solid, squeak-free base.

Why It Matters

Skipping prep leads to:

  • Separating planks and open seams.
  • Cracking locking mechanisms on LVP/Laminate.
  • Hollow sounds and squeaking.
  • Voided manufacturer warranties.

Don't risk your investment. Ensure your installer takes subfloor prep seriously.
