Moisture Protection in Flooring Installation

Water is the enemy of flooring. Whether it's rising damp from a concrete slab or ambient humidity in the air, managing moisture is critical for a long-lasting installation. Here is the science behind how we protect your floors.

The Threat: Concrete Moisture

Concrete acts like a sponge, wicking moisture from the ground below. Even decades-old slabs can hold significant water. If you glue wood or vinyl directly to damp concrete, the pressure builds up and can cause:

  • Cupping: Wood planks curling at the edges.
  • Adhesive Failure: Glue turning to mush and releasing the floor.
  • Mold: Growth underneath the flooring planks.

Our Solution: Testing & Barriers

Step 1: Moisture Testing

We don't guess. We use Calcium Chloride tests or Relative Humidity probes to measure the moisture emission rate of your slab.

Step 2: Moisture Barriers

Based on the test results, we apply the appropriate protection:

  • 6-mil Plastic (Floating Floors): A simple, effective vapor retarder for floating laminates and engineered woods.
  • Liquid Membrane (Glue-Down): A roll-on epoxy sealer that creates an impermeable shield on the concrete before glue is applied.
  • 2-in-1 Adhesives: Premium glues that contain moisture-blocking properties in one step.

Humidity Control

For wood floors, air humidity matters too. We advise homeowners to maintain indoor humidity between 35-55% to prevent seasonal gaps (shrinking in dry winter) or swelling (expanding in humid summer).
