You've invested in beautiful hardwood floors from DuraRoots. Now, how do you keep them looking showroom-ready for the next 20 years? Hardwood is durable, but it requires specific care to maintain its finish and structural integrity.
The Golden Rules
- No Water: Never wet-mop a hardwood floor. Water causes swelling and finish degradation. Use a slightly damp microfiber mop with a specialized wood cleaner (like Bona).
- No Vinegar: Vinegar is acidic and will dull your polyurethane finish over time.
- Shoes Off: High heels and cleats can dent even the hardest woods. Establishing a "shoes off" policy is the best protection.
Managing Environment
Wood is a living material. It breathes.
- Humidity: Keep indoor humidity between 35-55%. Use a humidifier in dry Santa Ana winds and a dehumidifier or AC in humid summers.
- Sunlight: UV rays will change the color of wood over time (ambering or fading). Rotate rugs and furniture periodically so the floor ages evenly.
Scratch Prevention
Trim pet nails regularly. Dirt and grit are the enemy—sweep often to prevent them from acting like sandpaper under your feet.
Long-Term Maintenance
Every 3-5 years, consider a "screen and recoat." We lightly buff the top surface and apply a fresh coat of finish. This removes surface scratches and restores sheen without the dust and cost of a full sanding.
