Engineered Wood vs. Solid Hardwood: Which is Right for Your Home?

One of the most common questions we get at DuraRoots is: "Should I choose solid or engineered hardwood?" Both offer the beauty of real wood, but they are structurally different. Understanding these differences is key to choosing the right floor for your Southern California home.

What is Solid Hardwood?

Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like—a single, solid piece of wood milled from a tree.

Pros:

  • Longevity: Can be sanded and refinished 5-7 times, lasting 100+ years.
  • Traditional Appeal: The gold standard for real estate value.

Cons:

  • Moisture Sensitivity: Expands and contracts significantly with humidity.
  • Installation Limits: Cannot be installed directly over concrete without a plywood subfloor system.

What is Engineered Hardwood?

Engineered wood features a real hardwood top layer (veneer) adhered to a high-quality plywood core.

Pros:

  • Stability: The cross-ply core prevents warping and bowing, making it ideal for wider planks (7"+).
  • Versatility: Can be glued directly to concrete slabs and installed in basements.
  • Eco-Friendly: Uses less slow-growing hardwood per square foot.

Cons:

  • Refinishing Limits: Depending on the wear layer thickness, it can only be refinished 1-2 times.

Which is Right for You?

If you have a raised foundation with a wood subfloor and want a floor that will outlive you, solid hardwood is a classic choice. However, for most homes in Los Angeles and Orange County—especially those on concrete slabs or near the coast where humidity fluctuates—engineered hardwood offers the perfect blend of beauty and stability.
